Our Story

When lifelong power boater Jerry Kyle started Great Lakes Scuttlebutt magazine in 1992, he already had dabbled in the marine publishing business but without much success.

There was Lake Erie Boat Finder, Roostertail’s and even a marine-oriented knockoff of Playboy called Playbouy, which ticked off a certain well-known publisher who favored smoking jackets and abruptly ended the enterprise.

However, with Scuttlebutt Jerry found a winning enterprise that served Lake St. Claire and western Lake Erie boaters – and advertisers. The magazine was filled with interesting articles and useful information, and the price was right. Free.

Unfortunately, health issues sidelined Jerry at the new millennium. His son, Erik,  bought the magazine in 2001. Recognizing the competitive nature of the marine publishing business, Erik, also an avid power boater, decided to expand the reach of Scuttlebutt to cover all of the Great Lakes. He improved the magazine’s design, including a glossy cover, and upped the circulation from around 12,000 to 50,000.

Kyle Publishing, as it was then called, flourished until the Great Recession of 2008. As advertisers dwindled in the print version of Scuttlebutt, Erik decided to diversify. The company developed a newsletter for its Scuttlebutt subscribers. They created an on-line version of Scuttlebutt. And they created a giveaway program from their advertisers to their readers.

Beginning in 2012, the company discovered while talking with advertisers and publishers at marine shows that there was potential for advertisers to buy unsold advertising space at a significant discount on marine industry websites. Out of that opportunity was born the Marine Ad Network, a digital marketing company involving marine industry publishers, advertisers and marine show venders.

The Marine Ad Network caught on quickly, opening the door for another opportunity – combining geo fencing technology with hyper local marketing to connect marine show visitors with vendors before, during and after the show.

With three entities under the Kyle Publishing umbrella, the company in 2017 changed its name to Kyle Media to better reflect its diversity in the world of marine industry publishing and digital marketing.
